The History & Science behind makeup

A woman without paint is like food without salt.”- Roman philosopher, Plautus

For centuries makeup was worn in religious rituals, to enhance beauty, and to promote good health. Cosmetic usage throughout history can be indicative of a civilization’s practical concerns, such as protection from the sun; class system; or of its conventions of beauty.

In all cultures, women and men have been wearing makeup in some form since ancient times. For example, the ancient Egyptian women wore eye paint, and Japanese women began adorning their faces with powder made from rice. European women of centuries past used chalk-based powders on their faces while Greek women used red iron to decorate their lips. In African culture, face paints were considered as war paint.

There are many reasons why women choose to wear makeup – the top reasons is to enhance their natural beauty and be more physically alluring.

Most women wear makeup because it gives them confidence, some women wear makeup to cover up hyper and hypo pigmentation. Women can use brighteners and cosmetics to camouflage blemishes, visible pores, uneven coloring, pimples, and even some scars. Some women may wear makeup to give her face a more youthful appearance, and for some, makeup is worn to be sexier.

For example, if a woman has pretty eyes, she may use eyeliner to make them stand out more. She may also apply mascara to her eyelashes to make them appear longer and fuller, further calling attention to the natural beauty of her eyes. Some women even wear makeup just because it’s fun to look a little different for a time.

Now women and men alike can wear makeup to enhance their beauty and more importantly to show healthy skin. Cover ups are not ideal, but temporarily provides a sense of confidence until skincare treatment effects kicks in about 6 to 8 weeks.

Wearing cosmetics is like putting on a beautiful garment – it is about the beauty, the joy the fabric brings, and just wearing beautiful things.

In the end makeup serves a purpose but beauty really comes from within. Good health radiates with beauty!
